Terror of the future
So this sweet young lady just jerked me up short and hit me upside the head with reality...She was the physical therepist who's job it is to bring reality to those of us living on the teddy bear planet. In other words, the aftermath of this event is "PAIN!" real pain. My chest is allready hurtin in anticipation.
After the surgurey I will be unable to get in and out of bed or a chair without help, for a period of around six weeks. J. Edgar Dogg will be of minimal assistance in this, as in most endevors.
I don't know why I hadn't thought of this before, the information was there before me to see.
Maybe I can get the services of a helper for a few weeks after the surgery, at least until I can fend for myself. They could come in and get me up in the morning and help me to bed at night. Maybe call and check on me in the middle of the day. Well, something like that anyway.
I shall find a way, Me and Wonder Dogg can do anything. Especially if I do it and he sits by me watching.........
We Shall Overcome!

Yes you shall overcome!!!
I too, have to get a PT to come to my house. BLAHHHHHH. I was thinking, the prepartion of getting ready for PT (remember I'm female!) is exercise enough. Ya know, clean up a bit, a little makeup and clean up the pet fur, etc...and then I'm ready for bed.
Posh.
The more I post here, the more difficult it is to read the word verification thingie. Is that me or a sinster plot?
Hmmm...you'll likely need someone full time, at least for a few days - and, dare I say it, a commode by the bedside? You're going to feel like you've been run over not just by one semi but a convoy. The upside, or so I'm told by folks who have been through this, is that you WILL feel an amazing difference once your body is getting all the oxygen it has been deprived of for so long. Positive thoughts are winging their way to you from California!
More positive thoughts for you from another part of California!

Jen, thanks for the update. For some reason, I haven't been able to post here to the blog this evening. I'm glad to hear he came through alright. He sounded much more upbeat about it last night, than he had a few days ago. And my phone # is 972-939-2526, if you need it.
Thanks for the updates, Jen. I appreciate it. Let him know if you can his readers are with him.

I felt something about this just now, Jen. It's like he was checking in with all of us. Did something (plaque?) come loose and hit his brain during surgery? Love and light be with you right now and always. Dave's right, sometimes it can't be fixed -- and then, sometimes it can. Thank you for telling us what's going on.

Sorry to arrive late to the situation. I haven't been following Dave's blog regularly and just found out.
For what it's worth, his symptoms sound a lot like those of a mutual friend when the hospital had her overdosed on pain meds. It cleared up when her meds were backed off. We can only hope.
Best wishes and good thoughts on the way.
Keeping you and your dad in my thoughts, Jen. I will continue to hope for the best.
Is he off the pain killers or, at least, on less of them? Those were the problem in the other case I mentioned above. According to a doctor friend, over-medicating older patients with them shuts down the cerebral cortex, leaving only the animal brain in charge of the body and resulting in behavior similar to what you're describing. I don't know if that applies to Dave's case or not, but it's something to hope for.
Still sending good thoughts and hopes.
Thanks for the update, Jen.
Thanks Jen for keeping us updated. I haven't checked in a few days because I've been sick. I wish the news were better. Maybe he has just found a really good fantasyland to live in while his body heals....
Yay! that sounds so much better. It should just keep improving from here -- I'll keep my fingers crossed (well, not literally, but figuratively....).
Thanks Jen
Thank you so much for the updates, Jen. I know this hasn't been an easy time for you.
This is wonderful news indeed! I look forward to his return to blogging again. :-) May 2007 be his year.
Ya know what they say about wine. 'Tis better with time. Dunno about the stress part.
David promised me he would live through this -- so he could have some San Francisco sourdough bread, and we plan to hold him to his promise. Give him regards from Robin and Bennett, tell him he missed the latke party, and we'll have the sourdough ready for him.
Say Hi from Kim Cooper too. Tell him I'm pulling for him.
Tell him he has to wake up. It's time we went out and got arrested again.
Wonderful news, Jen! Please convey best regards and warm wishes from Kate, Mama Lee, Fred and Kim. Have a safe journey!
Jen, I'm glad to hear that you've been able to make the trip. I'm sure he'll be happy to see you.
This is very exciting news, I'm thrilled to pieces to hear he's doing well! Can't wait to him from him and Dogg again. :-)
I talked to David this afternoon, and while he sounded weak, his mind seemed clear. His memory, on the other hand, was a bit fuzzy about anything that had happened since the surgery. He will be moving to a rehabilitation facility, as Jen said, and expects to be there several weeks. He doesn't yet have the energy to post here on the blog, but appreciates all the good wishes and kind thoughts from everyone.
I'm happy to hear the news. I know he will post when he can so no worries!
Thanks for the update!
Sherry
I spoke with David at the rehab facility. His voice isa very deep basso, but he sounds totally lucid. He has to kearn how to walk and do other simple tasks again, buit sounds hopeful and quite amazed that he survived the surgery.
Bennett Woll
Thanks for the update, Bennett. Sounds good.

I talked to David this evening, and he had been out for a short daytrip to have dinner and check to see that his house was OK. He's improving slowly, clearly not as fast as he would like. He thinks he'll be at the rehab another two weeks. He tried to access the blog today, but simply can't type yet.
Thanks Patricia. It's never as fast as you would like....
Who's got J. Edgar? How's he doing? I'll bet he misses David. I hope they will be able to be back together soon....
J. Edgar is at David's nephew Dale's house, where he has a big backyard to run around in. I'm sure they're taking good care of him, and may even bring him to visit David at the rehab.
Thanks for providing some "out" time, Dale! I'm sure David appreciated the escape from the rehab center, even if it was only temporary.
Anyone who's had a tube down their throat for several days is going to suffer some irritation. Whether the docs 'fess up to it or not, sometimes minor damage is caused by both the insertion and removal of the apparatis...
Yay, David!! Hang in there, kiddo! We're rootin' for ya!
Kate and Mama Lee
That is terrific! I'm happy to hear about this. Glad to know he's improved enough to come home on Monday.
And I'll say it- Welcome home, Dave! :D
I've had trouble accessing the comments section. Keep getting error messages!
Uncle Dave in Rehab yet? :)
If so, let me welcome him to Rehab! And how long will he be there? Tell him I said hello and I saw a Dogg that looks just like J.Dogg yesterday!
I spoke with Dave. The VA hospital released him to the rehab center under Medicare rules. He spent 21 days there, the Medicare limit, and was evicted. He's now at home.
His voice has returned to its usual register, and he is getting stronger each day. He does need a lot of help, still.
Bennett
Tell Dave welcome home! I'm glad he has improved and look forward to seeing him post again.
Thanks for the update, Bennett.
Dave has been having access problems himself here -- some changes they made while he was offline are causing issues. He's regaining his strength, but is still quite weak. A trip to the doctor yesterday just wiped him out. But his nephews and their families have been helping him as much as possible.
